Cavendish Farms, 2008

Preparation of demographic projections (2008-2018) of household spending on frozen potato products and restaurant meals in Cavendish's major market areas in the United States and Canada.

Insurance Institute of Canada, 2008

A demographic analysis of the work force in Canada’s property and casualty insurance industry. The final report contains:

  • An analysis of existing statistical data bases on the insurance industry work force in Canada and the United States.
  • Development of current demographic profiles of selected industry occupations from data supplied by participating companies.
  • An analysis of the linkages between the company/industry demographic profiles and current demographic profiles of provincial labour forces.
  • A survey of the perceptions of senior human resource managers within the industry of the issues and trends impacting the recruitment and retention of workers in the selected occupations.
  • A projection of the growth of the insurance industry work force by province for the period from 2006 to 2016.
  • Recommendations regarding the strategic implications of demographic trends for the insurance industry's work force.

Ontario Cast-in-place Concrete Development Council, 2008 (in progress)

Research on the impacts of demographic, economic, and technological trends on the cast-in-place concrete industry in Ontario. Surveys of workers’ and employers perceptions of training needs. Facilitation of a strategic planning process and formulation of an industry-wide strategy.

Public Safety Canada -- Aboriginal Policing Directorate, 2008

Analysis of projected demographic trends for North American Indian and Inuit groups across Canada and the impacts of demographic trends on the pattern of Aboriginal criminal behaviour.

Carpenters' District Council of Ontario, 2007

Preparation of a brief for submission to the Ontario Government regarding the compulsory certification of the general carpentry trade.

City of Grande Prairie, Alberta, May – August, 2007

Updated demographic analysis of City’s work force (project conducted previously by R.A.L. in 2002) and recommendations regarding succession planning and worker recruitment and retention policies and programs.

Carpenters Union Local 27 Training Trust Fund, 2007

Analysis of the projected demand for and supply of general carpenter and floor coverer apprentices in the Greater Toronto Area between 2006 and 2016.

Central Ontario Regional Council of Carpenters, Drywall and Allied Workers (CORCC), 2006 - 2007

Preparation of briefs to the Federal and Ontario governments, respectively, on issues affecting the construction industry in the Greater Toronto Area (for example, recruiting at-risk youth into the carpentry trade).

Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2006 – 2007

Preparation of two research studies:

  • Projection of the number of visits to Ontario Provincial Parks and the demand for park-based recreational activities between 2006 and 2016.
  • Projection of the demand for fishing and hunting licenses in Ontario between 2006 and 2016.

Canadian Forest Service, Natural Resources Canada, 2006

Along with 55 experts in different disciplines and sectors from across Canada, participated in a two-day workshop on climate change and the impacts and adaptation strategies in the forest sector. Made a presentation on Canadian and global demographic trends and the impacts on the forest sector and CO2/GHG emissions. Provided input on development of social, demographic, and economic variables in the draft National Vulnerability Assessment Framework regarding climate change and the forest sector.

Lac La Ronge Indian Band, 2006 (with Planning Solutions Inc.), 2006

Developed demographic profiles and population projections of Saskatchewan’s Registered Indian population as part of a strategic planning exercise.

Ontario Formwork Association, 2005 - 2006

Design and implementation of three strategic planning sessions and preparation of a report including an analysis of the impacts and implications of demographic trends on the industry.

Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources, 2005

Demographic analysis of the Ministry’s work force, mandated activities, and use of the Internet. The report provides input into the MNR’s strategic planning process. Presentations were made to the Ministry’s Directors and Human Resources Planning Committee.

Provision of demographic research as part of Pizza Pizza’s strategic planning process. Presentation made to the CEO and senior management team.

Niagara Economic Development Corporation, 2004 – 2005

Design and implementation of a stakeholder consultation program for Navigating Our Future: Niagara’s Economic Growth Strategy. Participation in brainstorming sessions to develop the draft strategy document for approval by Niagara Regional Council.

Canadian Welding Bureau, 2004 – 2005 (with Sedgwick & Company)

Provision of demographic research as part of the CWB’s strategic planning process. Presentation made to senior executives of the CWB.

Central Ontario Regional Council of Carpenters, Drywall and Allied Workers (CORCC), 2004 - 2005

Design and implementation of a survey of current, exited, and retired members of CORCC’s constituent locals to identify and analyse their perceptions of the issues facing the Carpenters’ Union in Central Ontario. The ultimate objective of the survey is to provide a basis for a recruitment and retention strategies.

Millar Western Forest Products Ltd., 2003 – 2005

Development of 200-year population projections as part of the multi-disciplinary Detailed Forest Management Plan (DFMP) that Millar is required to submit to the Alberta Government. The projections analyse population and land use change in central Alberta, in particular the area from Edmonton north to Whitecourt, the site of Millar’s Forest Management Area (FMA) and pulp-making and lumber operations.

Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Ontario Operations – Southwest Region, 2004

Design and facilitation of a two-day session for the discussion of operational issues between the Southwest Regional Management Team and their direct reports. Issues examined include succession planning, budget forecasting, and work/life balance.

BDO Dunwoody LLP, 2004

Provision of demographic research as part of BDO’s strategic planning process.

Carpenters’ District Council of Ontario, 2004

Facilitated a two-day planning session of the Council that had three objectives:

  • To define branding and review case studies of how different organizations have benefited from having a brand that is coherent and highly recognizable.
  • To discuss the opportunities and challenges involved in establishing a consistent brand for the Carpenters' Union.
  • To identify the actions that are required to improve the visibility and awareness of the Carpenters' Union through branding.

Exterior Insulated Finish Systems (EIFS) Industry Conference, 2004

Facilitated a two-day conference designed to discuss industry trends and issues and to make recommendations regarding the resolution of the industry’s most pressing problems. Participants represented three key stakeholders within the unionized sector of the EIFS industry in Ontario:

  • Employers who are members of the Interior Systems Contractors’ Association (ISCA) and who are signatory to a Collective Agreement with the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT).
  • Business representatives from Local 1891 and District Council 46 of the IUPAT.
  • Business representatives from Local 675 and the Ontario District Council of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America (UBCJA).

ORGANIZATIONAL AND PROGRAM REVIEW

Labourers' International Union of North America, Local 506, Ambercroft Training, 2008 (in progress)

Adviser to the Board of Trustees on the recruitment of a new Training Director. In conjunction with a sub-committee of the Board, responsible for the organization of the recruitment process. In addition, expected to provide input on the final selection.

Construction Sector Council, 2004 – 2005 (with WGW Consulting Limited)

Between 1993 and 1999, an Inter-provincial Common Core Curriculum Standard (ICCCS) was developed for the Carpenter trade. The ICCCS was developed from the National Occupational Analysis (NOA) and contained all the training elements common to jurisdictions across Canada. Each jurisdiction was responsible for adding elements unique to its circumstances. The final version of the standard was distributed to Directors of Apprenticeship in 2000 for possible use in their jurisdiction. A related Common Apprentice Progress Record Book to track on-the-job training of apprentices was also distributed around the same time.

The project involved an evaluation using qualitative analysis of both the ICCCS and Record Book.
